Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Addison Oaks Park in Oakland county , Michigan . One of my favorite places to shoot the outdoors . I am in college for photography . I took the summer to camp and to enhance my photography .

Time

I was out looking for my nemesis , the Red Bellied Woodpecker. As usual he lead me away and I found a White breasted Nuthatch . The time was between 4:00 and 5:00 P.M. on October 18 , 2015. The sun was in perfect positioning for the photo.

Lighting

I used the natural sunlight . Always waiting for it to peak back through the clouds. This time of day I keep the sun to my back and slightly to one side . While the subject is in front of me.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 70d with a Canon EF - S55 - 250 mm f4-5.56IS lens . No tripod , I find them restricting when shooting outdoors . I used no filters and no flash. ISO 2000 , focal length 250 , aperture 5.6 , exposure time 1/1600 .

Inspiration

My inspiration is Nature and outdoors . It is unexpected , beautiful , and ever changing . I never know what to expect or what will inspire me to shoot for that day . When I took this photo i was out looking for my nemesis , The Red Bellied Woodpecker , instead I found this beautiful bird hopping all over a tree. Lighting and positioning was near to perfect . " What is here today might be gone tomorrow . So I seize the camera and find inspiration everywhere outdoors . " Dawn Bennett

Editing

The only post- processing was resizing for web and print .

In my camera bag

I carry a Canon 70d with the lens 55 to 250 mm f4 - 5.6 IS . In my camera backpack i have extra camera batteries , extra memory cards , cleaning kit , micro - fiber clothes , Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT . I also have an extra camera body a Canon EOS 7d Mark 2 , canon lens 18 - 55 1:3.5 - 5.6 IS STM . i also carry filters polarizing and close up . I also wear a fanny pack for quick and easy access i will keep an extra lens with a filter on. Which lens and filter depends on what I would like to shoot for the day .

Feedback

I find it extremely hard to photograph birds , their unexpected action and constant movements . I find using a high speed continuous shooting method works great . Lighting is extremely important for catching details [ textures ] in the feathers , eyes , and color . Have patience you will get the shot whether it be the one you wanted or an unexpected . That is the beauty of Mother Nature .
