This shot was taken half way up Knox Mountain in Kelowna, BC, Canada. The Fintry Queen paddle wheel ferry was docked just north of a paper mill along the eastern shore of Okanagan Lake.Time
It was an early start to a beautiful and sunny, warm autumn day. We had received some bad news the night before requiring an emergency trip up to Cariboo country. After seeing family off, I needed to spend some time in nature to "recharge" which prompted me to take a trip up Knox Mountain in Kelowna, BC at about 7:30am. I sat and enjoyed the peace and quiet with a cup of coffee in hand and my camera backpack on. I looked down at the 69 year old ferry that had been moored in this spot for over a year. That morning, my goal was to just to connect with mother nature, take a few photos and I got so much more than that.Lighting
With a bit of patience, I waited for the sun to light the Fintry Queen at that angle and thankfully the water conditions were very calm which made for a great reflection of the Queen in the water. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the photo on my computer.Equipment
I used my Nikon D5200 with the DX 55-300 mm kit lens, no tripod or flash as it was a sunny day with no wind (thankfully because I forgot to bring my tripod).Inspiration
I needed a "pick me up" and there is no better way to raise my spirits than by heading out into nature and taking photographs. I don't have to go very far to capture interesting scenes. The Fintry Queen has been a local news headline every now and again because no one wants it and is considered to be derelict. I wanted to capture it as it is was at 69 years of age with all its blemishes. It was about grabbing a piece of local history and even though it is old, it still has a tale to tell.Editing
The only post-processing I did was to crop the image because I wanted to capture the loneliness of this historic ferry that no one really wanted anymore.In my camera bag
I never go anywhere without my Nikon D750, Nikon 85mm f/1.8 prime lens, Nikon AF-S 10-24 f/3.5 - 4.6 ED lens, and my Nikon AF-S 200-500 mm f/5.6 ED VR lens. I also carry my Nikon D5200 with my Nikon 35mm f/1.8 prime lens as back up and when the weather isn't all that great.Feedback
As I can attest to with this photo, you don't need the top of the line camera or lens to capture your surroundings, use what you have, track the daylight, the weather and shoot whatever appeals to you. You just need to get out there especially when your day to day grind tends to trap you to a desk. Walk around and capture different angles or perspectives. If your schedule permits, get up early and get outside or grab some shots at the blue hours or the golden hours. The world is changing rapidly as well as how we interact in our little corner of it so I choose to capture the beauty I see. I want to share my view of the world so that someone else might see it, hopefully enjoy the photograph and take their mind off all the chaos around us now. If I have done that with my shots then I am happy. I have come to learn that the best advice I can give is to enjoy the experience. If you are feeling contented or happy using your camera, it will show in the shots you take.
