Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a theme park in Branson, MO called Sliver Dollar City.

Time

I took this photo in the afternoon. I remember walking across the tracks several times this trip taking pictures trying to get one that I was happy with. At this point my wife and child were both tired. I wanted to get this one just right as it would be my last attempt. So with the my wife unhappy that I was stopping one more time on the tracks, and our baby worn out from a busy day I did my best to level the camera and get my shot as quickly as possible.

Lighting

I really took almost no care for the lighting. What I really wanted was what I could see. So I just did my best to not over or under expose the shot. I did notice that it was a very bright day, and I was shooting into a shaded area so I did compensate just a little to allow a slightly longer exposure to pick up the brightness in the shaded area.

Equipment

This photo was taken with a Nikon D5200 camera and a Nikon DX 55-200mm 1:4-5.6G ED lens.

Inspiration

I had a pastor one time who was a mentor of mine. He had on the wall of his office a picture of a dirt trail taken in a similar way. The path went out a little way from the viewer and the curves out of the frame. My pastor loved this picture because he said it reminded him that we don't always know what is coming up in life. We don't always know exactly what may be waiting just around the curve. I remember this every time I see this curve on these tracks at this park where my family loves to visit. I took this picture to remember this conversation with a mentor that will always look up to.

Editing

I didn't even crop this one. I can post-process, but when looking at the shot it just seemed better to share it as it was.

In my camera bag

More than I should. I am now carrying a Nikon D5300 with a 55-300mm Nikon lens and a 18-55mm Nikon lens. I also carry tripod which just changed to a Promaster XC525. Two or three battery backups, extra memory cards, battery charger, Promaster lens release, and a few other items just waiting to be used are typically included in the bag for any trip.

Feedback

A curve is a curve. I know it may sound dumb, but I have a love of shots of curves that are not going any place fast. The thing is to find a curve that is not just a curve. My family loves this park and I have looked down this section of track from this spot many times growing up. Not only that it also gives a little bit of the feeling that you are looking into an area behind the buildings that wouldn't normally be seen. That is a little staged I am sure, but it does none the less. I think for a curve to be more than just a curve it needs to have something else to bring a little spark of curiosity. Really when it all comes down to it there is a set of memories here, and that makes it special to me.
