This photo was taken at Playa Tamarindo, Guanacaste, Costa Rica where I live. This photo was taken with a Nikon D7000.Time
Taken at sunset around 5.30 pm.Lighting
Our sunsets like this are amazing. The light here is terrific. I have lived here for over 6 years. I am still blown away by the clarity and luminance of the light in Costa Rica. Very little else to say. You just have to be there to capture the image.Equipment
Nikon D7000. Nikon 18-70. No tripod - I have one for the occasional property shoot but don't like them for sunset or landscape work. I've been taking photos for 60 years. I like the way I work and won't change it now. No flash, no ND or other filter.Inspiration
Playa Tamarindo is blessed with fabulous sunsets - it is famous for them in Costa Rica. I live 150m from the beach. The light is also fantastic. Sometimes you can almost feel the colour in the light it is so intense.Editing
These days I do all my PP in Capture One for Fuji with Exposure X5 for Film Sims and other tweaks. This photo was processed in ON1 as far as I can tell. I still have ON1 but find it a bit too "strong" for my taste. PP itself is pretty quick. I know what I want and how to get it. If I have too much noise I use Topas DeNoise Ai which is a great piece of software. In my camera bag
My D7000 is long gone. Now I go to the beach with my Fuji XH1 & Fuji XF 18-135 (if it looks like rain). If it is not going to rain I will take my Fuji XT2 & Fuji XF 10-24 (which is not weather sealed) Sometimes I'll shoot with my XF 14mm f/2.8 on my XT1 which produces incredible RAW files. Now and then I'll shoot with an adapted vintage lens from Nikon or Konica on the XH1. I don't ever use a tripod for my sunset shots. My most used lens is the 18-135. A very underrated Fuji lens.Feedback
Come to Playa Tamarindo. Or come to the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. The light is amazing. Playa Tamarindo is famous for its sunsets. You just have to turn up and hope you'll get a cracking sunset! Then it's up to you how you capture that moment.
