Location
This photo was taken at Elk Island National Park, just east of Edmonton Alberta Canada on a photo outing with a group of other photographersTime
This was taken in the middle of August when the sun is already starting to set early than just a few weeks before and we start to realize that fall and winter are just around the corner for us. The time of this shot was 8:52 PM. Mountain Daylight TimeLighting
There is really not much I can share about the lighting in this shot as it is complete lit with natural light as the sun was going down fast on the horizonEquipment
This was taken just as I was starting to get back into photography and into the digital and my camera at this time was a bridge camera. A Canon Powershot IS5 IS and was taken on a tripod.Inspiration
My inspiration for this shot was the beautiful orange colour of the sunset and being a newbie to this art form I was slow to find my spot on the shore to get my shot. I was not that happy that I ended up shooting behind the grasses but when I got home and saw the silhouettes of the grass and the tiny duck swimming I was very happy with the result.Editing
As I was new to digital photography and using a bridge camera this was shot in jpeg and still being new I did not know any photoshop or lightroom at that time so this is a straight from camera shot with no post processingIn my camera bag
Today I shoot with a Nikon D90 and D600. My D90 has my Tokina 11-16 f 2.8 on it all times and my D600 has a variety of lenses attached depending on what I'm shooting. These include 50 mm f1.4, 85mm f1.4, 24-70mm f2.8, 70-200mm f2.8 which are all Nikon lenses and a Sigma 105 macro f4.5, I have 2 Nikon SB 800 flashes, as well as 2 manfrotto tripods and 1 manfrotto monopod.Feedback
Anyone wanting to capture the beautiful sunset colours should arrive at their location early and get set up in the ideal spot. Shoot a few test shots to be sure you have your camera settings set correctly and you only have a few minutes to get the great colours before they change. Continue shooting until the sun is completely down and the light is gone adjusting your settings as you never know how it is going to look when it is on screen or printed.
