Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the end of the Homer Spit in Homer, Alaska.

Time

It was the middle of the day and I was taking pictures of the mountains and some birds sitting on the water. Then I saw a boat approaching and thought, "this will be cool." So I snapped several pictures as the boat went by the birds. This particular photo was the best out of the bunch.

Lighting

This was one of those shots I was not really expecting to be taking. In this case you just have to snap a few shots and hope it comes out. But I was blown away by how the light at noon day bounced off of everything so nicely and really illuminated the picture. The haziness of the mountains in the background give the picture some depth.

Equipment

I was using an Olympus Stylus 820 8 megapixel digital camera. Not the top of the line camera but it captured some great memories.

Inspiration

In Alaska, everything around you is beautiful. So I took my camera everywhere with me and was constantly taking pictures.

Editing

I brightened up the photo a little bit and played with the colors some to take out some of the blue (there was a lot more blue before). And I may have sharpened the image to better capture the detail of the birds.

In my camera bag

This Olympus camera and my Iphone 4 camera are the only cameras I have. All of the pictures on my page, save one or two, were taken with one of these two cameras. I plan to purchase a good camera in the future when I've saved up some money.

Feedback

The best way to capture a stunning image is to always be out there taking pictures. The more you have your line in the water, the better your chances are of catching a fish...it's the same with photography. And it doesn't matter if you have the best camera available (though it would be nice), just capture something you think is beautiful and share it with others so they can see a little bit of the world through your eyes.
