Location
This photo was taken on a farm Worcestershire, EnglandTime
It was taken in the afternoon around three PMLighting
Used natural daylight to light the shotEquipment
Taken on a Nikon D610 with a Nikon 80-400 MM lens hand held because of the cramped conditions of the hide.Inspiration
I love owls, they are some of my favourite birds and I think little owls are so charasmaticEditing
The photo is almost straight out of camera only a small crop from the originalIn my camera bag
At the time I was shooting Nikon but I have made the swap to Canon as I find that there is a broader range of lenses and quite frankly Nikon priced me out of the market with their latest upgrades. The 7D MKII is an awesome camera and perfect for the bird and insect photography I do. My lenses are the Canon 400 MM f5.6 and a Sigma 150 MM f2.8 . I also have a 5D which I use for portraits coupled with a Canon 24-105 f4 lensFeedback
The best way to photograph these birds is from a hide. Owls are very shy and aware of their surroundings. Try and find a nest site and put out live meal worms over a period, this may take several months for the owls to feed from regularly. When the owls are taking the worms regularly you can introduce posts with small tins filled with meal worms nailed to them to have a natural looking perch alternatively sprinkle them on a wall like the bird in this photo is on. This photo was taken at the end of June so their young were almost ready to fledge. Between mid June and mid July is the best time for photographing little owls as they are at there most active during the day at this time because they have young to feed, also you may strike it lucky and get to see newly fledged birds
