This was taken at the Landguard peninsular in Felixstowe, Suffolk, England. My photography 'skills' are self taught and I first picked up a DSLR back in 2006 after a long gap from shooting film in the 1980's working and raising a family.Time
Since 2014, my wife and I have visited her parents every tear when they have rented an apartment in Felixstowe for a short break. This was taken just after 3pm in July of 2015. Felixstowe and Landguard Fort jointly ran a photo competition every year so I was always looking for something for that, this never made it as an entry but one similar did a couple of years later.Lighting
The original had nice sand and blue sky colours but I wanted a more dark and moody look for this shot. It was a lovely summers day which hopefully doesn't show in this image.Equipment
I am a Pentax user from my old film days so when I picked up a DSLR I went with Pentax again as there are loads of lenses out there using the K-mount. This was the K30 with 18-55mm kit lens with a circular polariser attached. I shoot vast majority of stuff handheld, including this one.Inspiration
I loved the texture of the old jetty wooden planks and the exposed nuts and bolts and being able to line the horizon up with the end of the jetty. My favourite prints are Black & White as this helps the viewer 'look' at the image better without being distracted by the riot of colour.Editing
Yes, in Photoshop I very slightly increased the saturation before turning it to B&W. Then I tweaked the highlights and shadows before adjusting the contrast. A straight B&W transform from the original left it looking a bit flat and washed out.In my camera bag
I now have a Pentax K70 with 18-55mm kit lens, 70-300mm Sigma lens, 50mm Pentax prime lens. A selection of filters both circular and slide in square graduated. Also carry a MZ50 film camera normally loaded with slide film. I love slides as it gives you a chance to see your image big on a wall and not small on a monitor or worse still on a mobile phone.Feedback
In the UK there is such a diverse landscape with mountains in Wales and Scotland to rolling hills up and down the country with very flat wide open countryside in Norfolk, Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire. Not to mention the very old historic buildings in our cities mixed together with modern structures. So find what you like to shoot and just get out there and shoot and learn. It's fine to capture what other people have as you then have a memory, but try to look at the scene a different way and you might discover a better image.
