Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on my ranch land about 15 km east of Smithers BC, Canada.

Time

The picture was taken during the morning hours in spring.

Lighting

The morning sun helped to accentuate the colorful birds and the aspen tree in which the nesting cavity was located!

Equipment

For this particular photo I used a Sony @ 900 camera equipped with a Minolta Maxxum AF 100-400/5.6 lens. To stabilize the shot a Manfrotto tripod was used.

Inspiration

As a biogeographer I am naturally interested to photographically document nature in all its varieties. The opportunity to photograph nesting birds in their natural habitat and at close quarters does not arise every day, especially not within 100 m from your doorstep! The location of the nesting cavity asked only for planning regarding light and therefore time of day.

Editing

I post-process most of my images in Adobe Photoshop regarding color correction, saturation and sometimes other effects. This particular picture was corrected in the RAW format, then changed into a high resolution Jpeg format and then further enhanced with OnOne Focus software plugins and Resize 7. A frame was also added enlarging the canvas size in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

Sony @ 900, Minolta AF 100-400/5.6, 28-85/3.5, 35-105/3.5, Metz 45 CT 4, Quantum Turbo Battery, Sekonic L-508, Manfrotto Tripod, CF and Sony MS cards. I also take a camouflage blind with me whenever the situation demands.

Feedback

Take lots of time to familiarize yourself with the location and given situation. Try to take a calm approach and do not disturb animals with your presence. Animals, depending on the species can easily get stressed out when you approach them or their reproduction sites. Set up, best with a blind, during times of least activity. Keep in mind that under most jurisdictions it is an offense to harass or bother wildlife. Wildlife that feels safe and is not annoyed by your activity provides for better photo opportunities.
