Moonrise and the Milky Way over Mt. Assiniboine.

Last week I spent a few days in this wilderness paradise. There are only 2 ways to get there. One is to hike about 20 miles from the logging road, and the other is to take the helicopter in. I took the helicopter. That was fun!

Mt. Assiniboine is just a few miles south of Banff in the BC Rocky Mountains. Right on the continental divide. This is a photo I have wanted to take for some time now. I had timed my visit to coincide with the lunar eclipse last week and with the larch trees in their full-on gold colour glory. The larches didn’t disappoint but the eclipse remained hidden behind the clouds. Bummer. That would have been spectacular beyond belief!!

This photo I took a little after the moon rose two days after the eclipse. The orange colour of the moon gave a nice glow to the higher, east facing mountains and slopes. The night of the eclipse I packed up my sleeping bag and carried it to this very spot to spend the night. It was a difficult place to camp. At 2500 meters above sea level, I was above the tree line and practically hanging off the side of a cliff. It was about minus 10 Celsius at night and the wind was howling. I managed to find a spot that was almost flat so I rounded up a bunch of flat rocks and built a platform big enough for my Thermarest. Sort of. I thought I might be being a bit crazy sleeping there but the view was incredible. I didn’t really sleep anyway with that cold wind in my face. I was worried that if I rolled over in my sleeping bag I wouldn’t stop rolling for about 300 meters of elevation. Not good.

And then there were the bears. It’s definitely grizzly country out there. In the campground I stayed at there were 4 other campers. One evening, when I was going out shooting, I heard a grizzly snorting in the bush less than 10 meters from me. Two hours later that bear crushed and shredded one of the other campers tents. Apparently, last year, another camper left food in their tent and a bear sniffed it out and destroyed their tent. The rangers figured that, because it was the same camp site, it was the same mother bear looking for the same score this year. Haha. All’s well that ends well.
