This photo was taken while on a boat trip in Clearwater Florida, the Dolphins were playing in the wake of the boat, I really couldn't believe my luck as they were so close.Time
It was around 11.30am-12pm and a very hot sunny dayLighting
the sky was blue with not a cloud to be seen and the sun was blazing, I didn't use any artificial light to help with this photo, just the natural light reflecting off the water.Equipment
This was shot with a compact Samsung NX1000 camera, Aperture F/10, iso 100, shutter 1/400, no tripod or flash, the boat was rolling side to side and up and down.Inspiration
I took a boat ride with my wife as we had been told that dolphins often follow and play in the wake of the vessel's sailing in the open water, I hoped to be able to get a reasonable shot of a dolphin leaping out of the water expecting it to be a long distance shot at best, I was amazed they got so close to the rear of the boat, the boat was rocking all over the place, I watched the dolphins closely and focused on one in particular, balanced myself as best as I could and anticipated the dolphins next leap out of the water, I couldn't have timed it better, the dolphin lept clear out of the water directly in front of my lens, seemingly looking and smiling at me, perfectly posing, I couldn't have asked for a better shotEditing
I've done a small amount of post processing using the Pic monkey online editing site, i've slightly adjusted the light and used the eye brightening tool to enhance parts of the water. In my camera bag
I have a number of different camera's all with their own personality, Panasonic G1 and the Samsung NX1000 to name just 2 but I currently use a canon EOS 600d with an 18-50mm lens and a 75-300mm telephoto back up.Feedback
Anyone visiting Florida should head to Clearwater for at least a day and take a boat trip, your almost certain to get some great results, the faster the boat the better as the dolphins love to play in the wake but make sure your able to stand up, get a prime position at the rear then wait for the fun to begin.
