Behind The Lens

This photo was taken in Losby outside of Oslo. It's actually in a garden next to the barn :)
It was in the summer and as you may know, the sun goes down very late here in Norway. It was still shining when this was shot at 8pm.
I always try to position my subjects in the shade to avoid shadows and harsh light. And I also prefer to shoot in the evening with a very low hanging sun. My dream condition is actually overcast and not sunny :) Makes it easier, and you can photograph all day long!
I always use natural light, so no flash. This was shot with my old Nikon D700 which I now have upgraded with a D750. Never use a tripod when photographing live animals. They move so quickly and are quite unpredictable so always be ready to move around!
The bond between this equipage! I had seen Nadia in a movie clip where she trick trains with her horse, Stjarna. It was so moving and inspiring that I had to contact her for a photoshoot. Luckily she said yes, and it's one of the most beautiful relationships I've seen.
I certainly did. As mentioned, I never use a flash so I often have to brighten up the subjects faces a bit in post-processing. Especially when the large horses steals all the light :) Otherwise I have not done very much with this one. It's not cropped in a traditional way, but I found that this was the best way to do it.
In my camera bag
For equine photography I only have my camera and lens (and some extra memory cards). For landscape photography I normally use a polarizing filter.
Try not to instruct your subjects too much. Let them find the connection with each other, and simply document them being togheter. With horses, always use 135mm or more and try to shoot at the height of the horses chest :)
