Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the International Water Lilly Garden in San Angelo, TX. The blooms and lily pads are enchanting. Dragonflies and damsel flies as well as bees flit from bloom to bloom. Learning to capture them in just the right position and light has been a challenge. Usually you get the tail side rather than the face or flank which shows the best detail.

Time

This was taken early afternoon... actually a time when you would expect the sun to be too high. However the gardens are in a bit of a hole having been created in a small hollow allowing the grounds and trees around the sides provide protection from the Texas sun.

Lighting

As I walk around these gardens the clouds moving over head and the shifting trees alter the available light. That special glow in combination with glittering wings is what catches my eye.

Equipment

At that time I was using a Canon 7D with a Canon 17-270 lens. Handheld, no flash. I loved that Canon 7D but it is heavy. I was forced to shift to a lighter weight camera due to a back injury and now use a Canon M50. I still miss that 7D.

Inspiration

The combination of the light, glowing color of the blossom and the position of the damsel fly who was posing for me inspired this shot.

Editing

I do minimal post processing adjusting. Honestly, this photo was taken in 2015 and I am not using the same computer so the information of what I did then is not available. I still keep it simple, adjusting midtones, shadows, contrast, structure and maybe a gentle crop.

In my camera bag

At the time this photo was taken I carried the Canon 7D along with the Canon 17-270. I also had a Canon 100-400 that is a fabulous lens. After the bicycle accident that caused the back injury I was forced to sell the 7D and 100-400 lens in order to force myself to stop using them. Now I carry the Canon M50 with a 50mm, Tamron 18-400 and 1.5 extender. As strength has returned I have also added a Tamron 150-600 lens for birding. I still miss that 7D.

Feedback

Working in Gardens you can visit at various times of year and day. Walk around these gardens, enjoying the variations of the blossoms and the changes in light available. The more time you spend exploring these gardens the more you will discover.
