Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a hotel in Arkansas on the way home from a vacation. I was out walking the dog around the backyard of the hotel for the second time so I carried my camera to get some photos of the Queen Anne's Lace which I had seen the first time I walked her. There were also some other wildflowers.

Time

This was about 7:30 or 8pm as the sun was going down. The hotel sat on a hillside so I hoped that I would be able to see the sunset as well as getting flower shots. Instead I had this incredible gold light on the Queen Anne's Lace.

Lighting

I stood downhill and lower than these flowers so that the gold would rim the edges. I took several shots of the light from different perspectives but this one had all the qualities I was looking for...the bokeh and the light coming through the bottom of the flower.

Equipment

I used a Canon Rebel T3 handheld. I had the 18-55 kit lens on it, set at 55mm and the camera set on P mode as I had the dog on the leash! It was also shot as a jpeg.

Inspiration

I knew I wanted to take some photos of the wildflowers but when I saw the golden light I just kept shooting from different angles and perspectives. Sometimes for me the best photos are just spontaneous, being in the right place at the right time. My main thought at the time was just trying to capture the light on the flowers.

Editing

I did very little post processing. If I can remember correctly, I tweaked the contrast just a bit and cropped the photo.

In my camera bag

At the time I had the Canon Rebel T3 with the 18-55mm lens. I also had a 70-300mm lens. I have since purchased a new camera, a Canon SL1 and have invested in a 24mm prime lens, a 50mm prime lens and an 18-135mm lens. I have a tripod that I very seldom use.

Feedback

Always have your camera with you. Opportunities for photos are always there if you just look. Be open to seeing with your eyes wide open. Always look at how the light plays. This flower was just Queen Anne's Lace, a weed but when the light shone on it, it was magic. Be ready for the magic.
