Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while sailing in Fiji in September 2015. It was taken from the deck of our boat.

Time

It was taken at 6am. I woke early and went up on deck hoping for a nice sunrise. Within minutes the sun's light appeared behind the nearby island and for about 30 seconds I was rewarded with this spectacular view.

Lighting

The darkness and interesting silhouette of the island contrasted really well with the warm glow of the clouds. There was also enough blue in the sky to provide a second colour contrast for the clouds.

Equipment

I shoot with an Olympus OMD-EM5 II and used a 14-42mm lens @42mm, 1/500s, f11, ISO200.

Inspiration

I'd taken quite a few nice sunrise and sunset photos on the trip but was looking for something a little more interesting. I was certainly rewarded that morning. I loved how the sun lit up the clouds making them look like they were on fire.

Editing

I cropped a little off the island otherwise there was no post-processing of this photograph. I generally use Lightroom for post-processing.

In my camera bag

I generally carry two lenses - the 14-42mm I used for this shot and my 40-150mm zoom. I also have a spare battery, memory card and lens cleaning kit. I carry a lightweight tripod if I plan to take long exposures, otherwise it gets left behind. I do a lot of street photography, even when travelling, so don't like to be weighed down by heavy equipment.

Feedback

You can't control nature and so have to make the most of whatever she throws at you. You can control your own actions though, by looking for settings or backdrops you'd like to use, and then making sure you're in the right place at the right time, even if that means getting up in the dark and waiting. I had less than a minute to get this shot as the light changed very quickly. Also, don't get fixated on a particular view or shot. Some of my best photos have resulted from turning around and seeing something completely different to what I'd planned to shoot.
