Location
This picture was taken from about 1,000 feet above the Knik Arm of Cook Inlet while returning to Lake Hood on a charter flight.Time
Obviously, the picture was taken at sunset, which I believe was around 5:00 PM on this day.Lighting
I use natural light for almost everything I shoot.Equipment
I used a Canon 7D with a Tamron 28-75 f2.8, handheld and shot out the open window of a deHavilland Beaver.Inspiration
I realized that the timing and lighting would be about right as I approached Anchorage, and that I would have to have my camera set up before we crossed the Arm. Everything came together as I flew across the Arm and I snapped several exposures in a few seconds and hoped for the best.Editing
I used Lightroom to crop the frame and adjust the Raw file's contrast, but the color is as shot.In my camera bag
As a commercial pilot I don't have the luxury of carrying a lot of equipment. My 7D sits on the floor between the seats, with either the Tamron 28-75 or a Canon 70-200 attached.Feedback
The best advice I can give is to ALWAYS have a camera with you. Any camera is better than no camera, and one never knows when that golden opportunity is going to pop up.
