Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my yard where I grow various flowers.

Time

This photo was taken during the day at about 12:20pm.

Lighting

I wanted to capture this flower to show off it's color against the blue sky background as the mid-day sun was shining.

Equipment

This was shot using a Canon T4i with a Canon 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II lens. The settings for the photo were: f/18, ISO 200, FL 116mm. No flash, or tripod was used.

Inspiration

I loved the colors of this cosmos flower. The fuschia-like color along the outer white flower petals combined with the yellow center is just striking. These flowers are a member of the sunflower family and are shaped to thrive in windswept conditions. This is just one of many in a patch in my yard that grew from one of many plants of various colors.

Editing

At the angle I caught this flower I had to crop out a nearby pole, although this particular plant reached 6 1/2 tall. I processed the RAW photo in Lightroom CC using lens distortion adjustment, slight contrast, color, clarity, and vibrance controls. I also used Photoshop CC to finish the photo off with a little light adjustment, and sharpening.

In my camera bag

I have 2 cameras now, my Canon T4i, and a new Canon T6s. I have several lenses, but carry a Canon 50mm f/1.8 prime, Canon 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II, and a Tamron 18-270mm lenses, along with UV filters, and circular polarizers for each one. I carry an intervalometer, remote, Cokin ND filters, and a Canon 430EX II speedlite. Importantly, I also carry cleaning items for my equipment.

Feedback

As with any photograph, waiting for the right time, and place, depending on what you are shooting, along with planning the shot even before thinking about hitting the shutter button is key. Although I have a lot to learn yet, that is exactly what I am doing by practice, practice, practice.
