Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Bannack, Montana. I was visiting the last original ghost town and the entire place intrigued me. My thoughts went directly to the past, to the people that had once walked through these doors and the people that called this place home. I thought of the children that had grown up here and the lives they must have led.

Time

The time of day this photo was taken was mid morning, just before a storm blew into the area.

Lighting

The lighting in this photo is completely natural lighting. I wanted to show the house across the street through the window so I adjusted my settings accordingly and got just the photograph I wanted.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D810 to shoot this photograph. I did not use a tripod or a flash.

Inspiration

Inspiration for this photograph was from the past generations that once lived in these deserted and empty homes and buildings. Inspiration of another time, so very distant from today in every way.

Editing

Light HDR was applied.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a Nikon D810, a Nikon SB910 speed light, my 24-70 Nikon lens, and also my 55-300 Nikon Lens.

Feedback

My advice to those looking to capture the same type of scene, is to simply take your time. Practice a steady stance for when you simply can't have a tripod with you. Get creative in your angles, sit on the floor, lay in the dirt, lean against walls, shoot through the cracks in the door if you have to. In other words, do what it takes to get it right. You are capturing a moment in time that will never exist again, therefore you should make the effort to capture it the way you see it or the way you would like it to be seen by others. Adjust your settings, those buttons and knobs are there for a reason. We live in a digital age where your results are instant, take advantage of that. Take your photo, adjust accordingly, take another, readjust if necessary until you portray what YOU want to portray. This is your moment in time, to show the world what you see.
