Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in front of the State Library of Western Australia on a photo walk with members learning how to use their Nikon camera after doing a photography course with Nikon Australia. We got to test different styles of camera settings and managed to grab this beautiful flower, I think it was also Springtime because the flowers were blooming.

Time

This was taken around mid-to-late afternoon, what I can remember is that I had lunch afterwards and wasn't complaining that I needed coffee, so it certainly wasn't in the morning.

Lighting

It was such a beautiful day in Perth, Western Australia. The light is natural.

Equipment

Nikon D7100 and I believe it is the SIGMA AF 18-250MM F3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM lens because I wanted a MACRO lens for photography of crystals & minerals. I quite love the macro photography but couldn't afford the really expensive macro lenses and have been using this as my primary lens.

Inspiration

I'm a lover of nature and take quite a lot of photos of flowers. The pink of this specific flower really popped with the greens in the background and it was a spare of the moment photo.

Editing

This is actually one of the very first photos that I had taken utilising the Nikon D7100 and I believe the only post-processing apart from exporting the file through Photoshop Lightroom is maybe the 'punch' as I hadn't dived into Lightroom as much as I have today.

In my camera bag

I have two bags, one is the Nikon D7100 with the tripod, 2 x batteries (I believe), charger, and the standard Nikon lens and then a low light lens which has no zoom. I managed to score this one specific lens on an incredible deal at a store. I'm always using the Sigma lens. I also have a filter but it's primarily for the lens that doesn't have the zoom and then a few cleaning cloths as well as business cards. This bag is the camera backpack but I also then have a smaller carry case just for the camera and the lens for if I travel and need a smaller bag. Another bag that and is a new addition is the GoPro 8 Black with a number of accessories and mods as I'm also moving into video capture for music videos that I create.

Feedback

Flowers make the best models and I do love to look up when the Golden Hour (sunset) as there's something special about the morning sunrise and the sense with how the colours show. The rule of thirds also applies and understanding geometric shapes. I was fortunate to have a lesson with an artist on circles, lines & triangles and how to present artwork to make that INCREDIBLE picture compared to an OK picture.
