Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Asilomar Beach in Carmel, CA. While driving the coast after a day trip to downtown Carmel, I was drawn in by the jagged rocks and a heavy mist created by the crashing waves.

Time

After a trip to downtown Carmel, capturing this magnificent sunset was the perfect way to end my day.

Lighting

As the waves crashed against the coastal rocks, it created a heavy mist, which diffused the light from the sun, creating rays that shone through the rocks. As an added bonus, it made the sun appear bigger and softer in the sky.

Equipment

I shot this on my Nikon d5100 with the 18.0-55.0 mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. I took a knee in the sand, and shot handheld.

Inspiration

I went out that evening to get a shot of the sunset near Carmel and the California coast delivered. Though I guess you could say I was inspired by my love for silhouettes and the natural beauty of the bay area's coast line.

Editing

For post, I darkened the blacks a bit while slightly boosting the shadows, as well as reducing the highlights and increasing the whites ever so slightly. Next, I increased the value on the clarity slider and added a gradient filter to add a more dramatic change in color on the right of the image.

In my camera bag

At the time, I was sporting a budget kit consisting of my Nikon d5100 with the kit lens and a sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6. I also had a ball head tripod and a remote trigger on me. As an inexpensive option, I found that this setup allowed me to be pretty versatile as long as I had plenty of light.

Feedback

Don't leave your camera at home. The trip that this photo resulted from was not specifically for photography, but since I had my camera on me, when I saw the sunset I was able to immediately get out to the beach and start shooting. For me at least, the second I step away from my camera, I see something I wish I could get an image of. Also, keep an eye out for mist or fog that might diffuse the light from a sunset. It can create some really breathtaking lighting, and if you've got your camera on you, it could make for a really amazing photo.
