Thanks JD, would you believe a camera club judge pulled this to pieces and gave a low mark mainly because the bright circular highlights in the background are distracting?

Location
This was taken on a camping holiday to Northumberland, Freddie (the subject) was about 4 months old at the time and there had been a heavy mist first thing, hence the dew on the grass. I called to him and he just gave me this look as if to say 'who me?' 'Did you want me?'Time

After the golden hour, which is why this was made into a monochrome imageEquipment

It was just a snap shot, documenting our holiday.Editing
I just cropped it and applied the monochrome touches in lightroom, I think i softened and darkened the background a little, because the brightness of the dew on the grass was drawing the eye.In my camera bag
My usual camera nowadays is a Nikon D5100, lightweight DSLR with an 18 - 140 lens, good enough to capture most moments on my way, I like walking a lot so I'm not interested in carrying a lot of heavy equipmentFeedback
Think about the subject and choose a good depth of field, I generally shoot in aperture priority, for a shot like this where the subject is relatively still I would use an aperture somewhere between F5.6 to F8 on a telephoto lens. On a shorter lens 18-50mm i'd keep it below F5.6. Always try to focus on the eyes as these are what give the image life.
