Behind The Lens
Location
the photo was taken at Dollar glen in Scotland. It was taken during a trip with a fellow photography enthusiast, to the many waterfalls that are scattered through the glen.Time
The photo was captured early in the morning around 10amLighting
the natural lighting was perfect for the pictures we wanted to capture that day. As we drove up to the location there was a thick fog that made driving quite difficult but luckily for us this had not dropped deep into the gully where the waterfalls were. This caused overcast but clear conditions which enabled us to slow the shutter speed enough to capture the movement of the water over the rocks, without the need for any filters.Equipment
As i am fairly new to photography, the camera i use is a nikon d3200. I have had various point and shoot cameras previously but this is my first foray into the world of dslr. The lens i used for this particular shot was my nikon 55-300mm zoom lens and the camera was set upon my small lightweight tripod i picked up on ebay for £19.99 last year. i also used my nikon remote to take the picture, helping to eliminate any camera shake.Inspiration
The scottish countryside has always inspired me. I have lived here all my life and i am still regularly amazed by the beauty and diversity of this beautiful country. This was the first time i had been to this location, but my friend mike works close to the area and knew the area quite well.Editing
yes, i am a subscriber to adobe creative cloud and made only a couple of minor adjustments using lightroom. i lowered the highlights slightly as the whites in the water were a little too bright. I also upped the saturation a little to make the greens of the moss on the rocks to really stand out.In my camera bag
the items i normally carry are the nikon d3200 body along with my 18-55 kit lens, and my 55-300mm zoom lens. This as a new photographer has given me a wide range of focal lengths from two lenses, that have enabled me to experiment and try various different types of photography from portraits to wide landscapes. Along with my tripod, i always carry a fully charged spare battery and extra sd cards. it didnt take me too long to realise that these were a must. nothing worse than running out of battery power when you are on a long hike. I have missed out on a few shots due to this, early on in my photography journey. I also carry lens cleaning cloths and blower and brushes. I think a cable release or remote control is a must for landscape photography so i carry both. I also have a range of cokin p filters that i picked up on ebay. The ones i carry the most are the circular polariser and a range of neutral density and grad filters.Feedback
Although this image was taken on my first trip to this location, in my experience this is very rare. If you find yourself a location where you feel there is a shot to be had, dont be afraid to revisit it time and time again and eventually you will find the right conditions. When this happens, the satisfaction that is gained from getting that image that you so wanted, is absolutely fantastic. Also it is vital if you are making a trip further afield to check weather conditions specifically for that area. its not the first time ive left clear skies at home to go to a location 40-100 miles away to find rain and glooomy grey skies above the area i wanted to shoot. in my experience a simple google search is ideal for this. Also iphone weather app very handy for this too, as this gives sunrise and sunset times.
