I went to college to study photography when I turned fifty. I spent three years there, even though I had been taking images from the age of 19. I consider myself a competent photographer and like to shoot most genres of photography. This shot came about when my wife and myself were in Scotland on holiday. We had our evening meal in a pub and came out to see this sight before us. I grabbed my camera out of the boot and put a 70-200 lens on. Getting the exposure was easy but the light was fading fast. I shot this handheld, there was no time to set up a tripod, and shot away. I took quite a lot of images and deleted most of them upon our return to our digs. I liked this one above the others because, to me, the horizon appears to be on fire. Whilst on holiday I met an artist from America and as we chatted this image came up and he asked me if he could paint the scene from my image, I agreed and sent him the file, he made a complete mess of it, in my opinion. He moved the boat and painted the sky Azure. I was so excited by the scene before me I forgot to close the boot and left all my gear exposed, but it was safe and all there when I returned.Time
This shot was taken about 7 o'clock in the eveningLighting
The lighting was just tremendous, it stayed like that for a full 15 minutes but it was getting dark very quickly. I knew I didn't have much time.Equipment
I shot this on a Canon 60D using a third party 70-200mm lens, handheld, I can't remember the settings though.Inspiration
Come on, who would not capture this image when presented with it.Editing
No pp was done on this image, just a slight crop.In my camera bag
Canon 60D, Canon 17-40mm lens, Canon 28-105mm lens, 70-200mm Sigma lens, Canon speed light, extension bellows, filters 9 Polariser, and three grey grads plus a grey filter, I now carry a lamp and the kitchen sink.Feedback
My advice for others is, when presented with lighting conditions and a scene that you will never see again, shoot away. Take as many images as you can and cull later. Use a tripod if possible, if not take the shot anyway, you never know. Stand back, after a while, and re-evaluate the scene. Move if need be to get a better angle, when the light is constant, as in this scene, once the exposure is correct forget that and just shoot. If you have a zoom lens on don't just zoom in to get a closer shot, move nearer as well.
