Location
This shot was taken during Vivid Sydney 2015 at the Argyle Street Arch in The Rocks Sydney.Time
During the night when the lights and projections of Vivid Sydney had been turned on and the crowd was out in full force.Lighting
I was working with available light to creatively capture the lighting projection on the roof of the structure. I also waited for people to walk through with coloured glowing lights to create light painting through my shot.Equipment
This was shot on a canon 6D with a Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 lens. Set on a sturdy tripod with a long exposure.Inspiration
I wanted to make a creative representation of how I saw the scene before me. Nothing was static. I saw time passing and movement. I wanted to recreate that movement within my shot. Using a long exposure I was able to capture a bright beautiful mixture of multiple fames of the video layered together, above a busy bustling crowd creating light trails that represents this movement of time.Editing
A little increasing of the shadows and decreasing of the highlights to bring out the details in both areas with a touch of saturation to bring out the beautiful colours in the lights was applied. In my camera bag
I always have both of my Canon 6D bodies, because you never know when the situation may call for a quick and held shot when you are all set up on your tripod! My Tamron 24-70mm f2.8, Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 and Sigma 50mm f1.4 prime. The Sigma is a beautiful lens! My sturdy carbon fibre tripod and of course my Canon remote is a must for long exposure night photography on a tripod!Feedback
When shooting light installations and light painting/trails, it is important to remember that the beauty is in the process. You can have the perfect settings all you like, however you can never predict how a shot might turn out. You are working with many moving parts and remembering this, will help you to enjoy the process of creating your art and to understand that your control ends there. I love not completely knowing how my shots will turn out and being pleasantly surprised when I make some beautiful ones that I am truly proud of. In addition to that, when shooting at Vivid Sydney, it is usually on during the middle of winter and it is cold out there, so rug up and enjoy the experience.
