Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo during a week long safari visiting different national parks in Tanzania. This particular photo was taken in the Serengeti National Park.

Time

Around midday.

Lighting

Being the dry season in Tanzania meant there was a lot of dust in the atmosphere. That combined with the fact that the sun was at it's highest and most intense resulted in undersaturated colours, which I actually rather like.

Equipment

Canon EOS 5D Mark II w/ Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM.

Inspiration

What I think makes this image is a case of being in the right place at the right time. We asked the driver to park up close to a watering hole where a pride were lazing. We were busy photographing a couple of male lions lazing in the sun. Far in the distance to our rear I noticed a herd of elephants closely bunched together, walking towards the watering hole which I was able to capture another favourite image of mine in this series http://www.viewbug.com/photo/58474995. As the herd came closer to the watering hole, I noticed that they began to slightly disperse and fall in a perfect line following the pattern big, small, big, small etc. I framed it the best I could and the rest is history.

Editing

I cropped it slightly to give that panoramic feel and made small adjustments to HSL.

In my camera bag

I generally enjoy shooting landscapes and carry my trusty Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM with me everywhere with a few different filters. For this particular safari I borrowed a friends Canon 70-200mm f/4.0 and rented a Canon 300mm f/4.0 with a 1.4x extender to get the focal length I needed for wildlife photography. Other kit includes my 5D MKII and MKIII and Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art.

Feedback

Time and patience is key for wildlife photography, try to anticipate the behaviour of your subject.
