The peace statue on the esplanade in Hove, East Sussex, England. A striking memorial to King Edward VII, who had a special relationship with the seaside town, that was unveiled on the 12th October 1912 and marks the boundary between Brighton and Hove. The monument is 27 feet (8.2m) in height, with the figure being about 10 feet (3m) and is a winged female standing on a globe representing the universe. In her left hand she holds an orb, the emblem of sovereignty, with the right arm being raised and holding an olive branch, universally recognised as a symbol of peace. Hard to believe that less than 2 years from unveiling the continent of Europe was plunged into the horrors of the First World War. Worldwide Peace has eluded the planet ever since and seems about as distant as the crescent moon in this image……………maybe someday.
Yes that is red paint at the base of the figure; the statute has seen more than its fair share of bird guano, protests and graffiti in its 100 years.
