Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Rice University in Houston, Texas. I'm a fan of symmetry, pattern, and shadows and just happened to catch this corridor I was intersecting. It took many attempts to get the shot angle right and the chair bothered me. At first wanted to remove it but decided the piece of furniture added a deeper sense of "emptiness".

Time

A busy fall day as students were scurrying to classes, I snapped this during a lull and everything was quiet. This photo was taken October 11, 2014, at 3:18 pm.

Lighting

A warm, muggy day, which is typical for Houston in the fall but the sun angle was much lower adding to a lower light level.

Equipment

An iPhone 6s was used to take this photograph. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I'd recently moved back from Europe, which is a photographers dream if you like old architecture so visiting an old university campus brought back the instinct to stop-and-shot everything. While the campus has many interesting architectural details, this space struck me with a sense of loneliness in its repetitive pattern and darkness.

Editing

I usually do not like to do any post-processing as I feel that I can edit in the field pretty good. However, I could not get the contrast I wanted in the time I had, so I simply ran it through iPhoto to bump up the contrast a bit.

In my camera bag

It's a tragic story. I was returning from a European trip and placed an unopened bottle of water in my bag. When I arrived home and opened the bag, my Canon 7D was dripping wet. I tried everything to resuscitate life back into it even taking it into a camera clinic. But it was too late. I still have the body in a box in the back of a drawer. Still mourning the loss. lol I know use my iPhone 6s, which doesn't compare to the 7D but its still a pretty good little camera.

Feedback

My initial response was to remove the chair from view... but my instinct overrode that response. Trust your inner voice.
