There is a famous restaurant in Pa'ia, Maui called Mama's Fish House. It is set on a small beach with outrigger canoes resting on the grass. I photographed one of them up close. They are massive close up, sleek, and hard to imagine in the ocean.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Paia, Maui.

Time

It was mid day, which is many places could be the worst time for photography involving a skyscape. Hawai'i is different, in that all times of day provide interesting lighting for portraiture, landscape, and waterscape photography.

Lighting

I was lucky to not have to alter much for the lighting to work. As a portrait type photo, I just needed enough light to capture some depth, and the sun through the trees provided that.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D5300. That's it!

Inspiration

The special Hawaiian outrigger canoes are awe-inspiring. I had never seen one in person and close up, and I was amazed by its size. It is a feat of engineering, and for so many of them, also artistically inspiring. This outrigger was sitting casually up past the shoreline--to me, it was like a found art masterpiece. I immediately started taking shots to try to capture the depth and breadth of it.

Editing

I sharpened the contrast and increased saturation. Again, there was not much that had to be changed, because of the amazing natural light.

In my camera bag

I usually just have my camera with its AF-5 Nikkor 18-55 mm lens. I take my portrait lens as well, in addition to a few protective elements for my camera.

Feedback

I would offer the advice to capture as many angles as possible of whatever you are shooting. You never know which angle will give you that line of sight that you want, or offer something you had not yet noticed. Also, play around with post-processing if you have access to software. It will be worth your time to experiment with mood, color, and tone.
