Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken along the side of a huge victorian bridge in Cheshire, England

Time

The sun was just going down and this was taken during the last few minutes of sun light.

Lighting

The last light of the day brought a whole new view on where I was shooting.

Equipment

This was my first time using a newly acquired manual focus 135mm 2.8 Pentacon Lens on my Nikon D300s, with an M42 mount. I also used a Manfrotto Befree Tripod to keep things steady.

Inspiration

I'd been shooting the architecture around me for a couple of hours with a wide lens and just as the sun was going down I switched lens to my new 135mm to see what results I'd get in the lower light. I looked through the view finder to frame a shot and this gave me a whole new perspective on the scene around me. There was a whole world I'd ignored previously as I'd been shooting wide and missing out on smaller details. I only had a few minutes of sunlight left and was experimenting with the lens for the first time. I fell for the lens straight away as it forced me to frame slower and think more about my shot. After a couple of failed attempts I got this image and then packed up for the day.

Editing

I did post-processing in Light Room pushing the presence and details a little and then added a little more vignetting to bring the attention to the centre of the picture.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon d300s with 2 batteries and 32G of memory over 4 cards. Manfotto Befree Tripod Nikon 85mm 1.8D that I picked up in Tokyo second hand. Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 Pentacon 135mm 2.8 M42 fit A cleaning kit M42 mounting ring An assortment of cheap plastic lens

Feedback

I always find that once I stray from what I usually shoot I get a little more inspiration to try new things. If you have any rules of your own, never be afraid to break them.
