Location
This was taken in a blackout studio to ensure I had completely control over the light.Time
It was a Sunday morning as my model/yogi had come up from San Diego -- another reason the blackout space was important.Lighting
They say photography is simply painting with light. The lighting makes this entire photograph and creates the drama. I wanted to shoot with lighting from the sides to give it an intense but frozen-in-time, hiding the normal features that would be emphasized.Equipment
This was shot with my Canon 6D and my 85mm prime 1.8. I was using two Alien Bees and a black backdrop.Inspiration
I think the human body is amazing. Yogis do incredible things with their body everyday, and I wanted to capture a glimpse of that. I feel implied nudes have an elegance that show beauty and respect. It inspires me, and I hope it inspires others as well.Editing
Very little post-processing was done. The model came in loose fitted clothing to make sure there were no lines and we shot with a backdrop. It was shot in color, as we changed that after the fact, as well as some minor retouching. In my camera bag
I always carry my 6D, 135mm/F2 prime and 85mm/F1.8 prime with two speed lights. I love portraiture and shapes, and these capture extremely wellFeedback
Once you have a model you want to use a long lens (preferably over 100m) and you want to shoot low. I crawled over the floor to get this shot and many others from around 30 feet away. The lights were setup almost exactly on either side of her, but pulled slightly forward. This allows very little light to go to the background and just enough to cover the model.
