Location
This was taken at the twelve apostles, along the great ocean road, in Victoria, Australia. It was my first (only so far) time there. The Great Ocean Road (GO Road) is a wonderful trip for landscape photographers, there is so much to shoot. If you're ever in Australia and want a great 3-7 day trip, I highly recommend spending some time along the GO Road. I must return there again!Time
We had spent the day travelling and shooting and had arrived at the twelve apostles in the late afternoon. The clouds were amazing! Alas sunset, a little while later, was not that spectacular, but no matter, the clouds made up for itLighting
With regards to the lighting, the cloud cover, coupled with nice afternoon sun made a wonderful natural softbox and beautiful soft light. Perfect!Equipment
This shot was taken with my Canon 5d mk 3, a tripod, Lee filters (Hard ND grad 3 stop and a Big stopper 10 stop) and a wide angle lens. 16-35mm f/2.8 L series from memory. The Big stopper makes much of the magic happen here, including the blue colour cast, which I like in this shot.Inspiration
This location is a popular tourist site and a classic "must shoot" location along the great ocean road. Composition-wise, I really liked the lead in from the foot steps and the amazing cloud cover. The fairly uncluttered and simplistic elements also assist this image to my mindEditing
I don't recall doing much post processing on this image at all. Most of the 'magic' was in camera and credit goes to Canon and Lee for the output (well and Mr Manfrotto too! If there was any post processing, it would only have been some tonal contrast tweaking and perhaps a little additional exposure added in. I still tend to underexpose a little when using my Lee filters and quite possibly did so here as well.In my camera bag
I normally carry the following. One Canon 5d mk3 body, 16-35mm f/2.8, 85mm f/1.2, Lee filters, cloths, tripod (outside the bag), remote shutter, batteries, memory cards, cleaning fluid and blowerFeedback
Learn how to shoot long exposures. You need a sturdy tripod, this is critical! You need low light or a way to block the light (ie Big stopper), which is also critical. Learn how long to leave the shutter open to get the right exposure time. Practice, practice, practice! Happy shooting
