Behind The Lens
Location
I took this photo at Torrey Pines State Beach in San Diego, CA, one of my favorite local beaches.Time
The photo was taken before Sunset on September 18, 2015.Lighting
The rays of light coming through the clouds create a nice backlight for creating this silhouette image.Equipment
Taken with my iPhone 5S, hand held natural light. Used the iPhone camera settings to adjust the exposure to let in less light and make the subject appear in silhouette.Inspiration
I wanted to play around with some silhouettes and reflections on the beach. My daughter was having fun jumping around and trying some different poses for me to capture. There was something about this pose that drew me in.Editing
A few minor adjustments in Lightroom gave the photo a little more contrast and a more dramatic feeling. In my camera bag
When I am photographing clients I always use my Canon 5D Mark III with either my 28-70 2.8 or my 135 2.0. which is my favorite lens. I generally have a 580 EX II flash in my bag as well although I shoot mainly with available light. I also rely heavily on my reflector and a small aluminum step stool which are with me at almost every shoot.Feedback
Creating silhouettes is easy with the right lighting conditions. You need a source of back light and a subject with a defined shape. For people you want to be able to see separation between their limbs. Adding action to the pose should add drama to the image. Also, shoot from a low angle to give you more backlight behind the subject.
