Behind The Lens

Location

I was riding my motor-bike towards Inverness from my home in Aberdeen when I noticed a large bird in a field to my left, and thought, "that's not a buzzard". Whipped out my camera and this is the result. A Harris Hawk. Being exercised from a local falconry. Got a couple a shots then it ran off!

Time

This would of been about mid morning.

Lighting

This happened on an unusually bright sunny day in Scotland. Luck has a lot do with it!

Equipment

My camera is a Canon EOS 450D, which I have had for a number of years now, this was with a 'normal' 50mm lens.

Inspiration

I like birds of prey, always have, so when I saw this Hawk in a field, unusually because this Hawk is not a native to the UK. The chance to snap a shot like this was not to be missed.

Editing

I sometimes crop my images to focus the attention onto my main subject, but that's all. This particular shot has not been 'messed about with' at all.

In my camera bag

Apart from my Canon EON 450D and the basic 50mm lens that came with it, I carry a tripod that was a recent acquisition in the form of a birthday present! A TAMRON 55-200mm zoom lens and another new lens, a SIGMA DG 150-500mm zoom. ALWAYS a couple of extra 'charged' batteries and a couple of empty cards, I know they hold a lot of images but, they can 'fail' or maybe you have a fantastic day snapping away at this amazing event or view or the sudden appearance of a fox or eagle, but don't get 'The shot', and at the end of the day and a 'full' card, a glorious sunset sillouetteing a 12 pointed red deer stag facing a wolf that has just escaped from the local zoo with a bolt of lightning cracking into the ground between them and........ you have no room on the card or you power goes.

Feedback

Luck, patience, Luck. Luck and Luck.......... Spatial awareness, always looking/seeing, never be afraid to click away at everything, sometimes the picture of your life just pops up when you are looking or taking a photo of something else. This was not a planned shot, I was in the right place at the right time and the weather was playing fair. Every view is an opportunity. Take a picture, look at the result, keep it, is it good? Great! Not so good? Learn from it.
