Location
This portrait was taken in front of my studio in West Tn. I knew I wanted to capture my new "prop" in front of my studio I purchased a little over a year ago. I think the bright fun colors of my studio helped bring out the best in the car.Time
It was 9am on a very bright sunny morning before my day started. I normally don't photograph in bright sun so I took it as a challenge to photograph at this time of day with no shade.Lighting
I knew I wanted to give the image a pop given the subject of the image. I had to drown out the bright sun by using an alien bee 800 powered on a vagabond mini. If you look closely in the front bumper you can see the alien bee flashing.Equipment
I used a Mark ii Canon with a 24-70L lens. One Alien Bee 800 to the left of the image powered by vagabond mini and Paul Buff transmitter and receiver.Inspiration
My husband bought me this car as a gift. 1954 Chevy. We planned to drive it on a regular basis and use as a "prop" in my portrait photography. We named her Jettie. This was my way of introducing her to my clients via social media and my website.Editing
I did post process the image in Adobe Raw and moved it into Photoshop to complete. I used an action from Warne Noyce (my awesome mentor) and then gave the image a pop using Topaz Labs changing the opacity until I achieved the look I wanted. I did have to edit outIn my camera bag
I use my Mark ii all the time and my 24-70L stays on it most of the time. I also carry an 85mm, a fisheye for fun and silly, and 70-200mm lens. I use inside the studio 3 Alien Bee 800s with a Paul Buff transmitter and receiver. I carry them outside if I am fighting full sun or trying to achieve a certain look. Most of the time I use a Canon 430ex ii off camera outdoors with a shoot through umbrella. It is how I started learning and gives it the pop I need for my portraits.Feedback
If you have no choice but to go with full sun I definitely recommend some type of off camera strobe or flash. Under other circumstances I would have preferred shade but could not have achieved this look if it had been cloudy that day.
