Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on Family day out at Mystic Beach in Jordan River. My partner and I had the day off, and decided to do a little exploring with our cameras.

Time

The rain had started and we'd already been exploring for a few hours when we decided it was time to head home, probably around 4:00pm. We were hiking back up from the beach and hit this staircase. I thought it looked like it could be a neat picture. I'd been practicing HDR photos and this is what the outcome was.

Lighting

This was a rainy overcast day so I really had to pay attention to my metering to make sure I wasn't too over or under exposed.

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon Rebel T2i, with EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 lens

Inspiration

We were walking back up to the truck and stopped to catch our breath and look back out at the ocean on the way... when we looked forward the rain had started and the staircase just had this mysterious look to it - decided to snap some shots to see if it would transfer through in to the image.

Editing

This was a three photo HDR merge. I used Photomatix to merge the three shots together and used the tools in that program to get the photo as close to perfect as I could. I then used lightroom to edit the sky which was a little blown out and fix some other minor items. Played around with brightness, clarity and saturation as well.

In my camera bag

I have since upgraded my Rebel T2i to the T5i. I usually keep the stock 18-55mm lens, 17-85mm, 50mm and 18-200mm in my bag, along with my remote and mini tripod. I also usually bring along my full size tripod as well.

Feedback

I'm still learning and all I can really offer for advice would be is, to take the picture. If you think there is a chance it could look awesome, then take it. Try different angles. Play with your camera's settings.
