Behind The Lens

Location

Every spring I look forward photographing the wildflowers on Texas Wildflower Trails. Lady Bird Johnson in the mid-1960s, advocated planting native flowers along the nation’s highways. Nowhere did this program produce more stunning results than in Texas. Texas Department of Transportation implemented conservation measures by delaying roadside mowing until spring flowers had gone to seed. Buys and scatters 15 tons of flower seeds on state roads every year. Each year is different results depending on the rain, droughts and land owners following good conservation measures. A good spring photograph opportunity for the abundance of wildflowers all over the State of Texas. Some of the popular trails are East Texas Wildflower Trails, Hill Country Bluebonnets, Central Texas Wildflowers, Big Bend Wildflowers. All have a lot to offer for a photographer. Huseman Road is off the path gravel road in Washington County outside Brenham, Texas. Part of the East Texas Wildflower Trail. A good spring photograph opportunity for the abundance of mix wildflowers.

Time

I started traveling at 4:00 am to photograph the East Texas Wild Flower Trail; 120 mile drive from my home. I wanted to try to get a good sunrise over a certain Bluebonnet field I seen the previous weekend. When I arrived to the sight it was overcast and raining. Started out as not a good day for landscape photography. By mid-morning the sky started clearing and even though I missed out of the sunrise I took the opportunity to photograph wildflower landscapes, following my GPS and driving back roads. I like driving off the path roads because less traffic, driving slower to spot good composition and see a lot of interesting things to photograph. Regardless of all there is dangers to watch for, heavy traffic while parking on side of road, rattlesnakes, mad bulls, ants, spiders and poison plants (bull nettle, ivy). After two to three landscape shots I drove up to this location that I've never been before, Huseman Road photo was taken at 11:51 am. Using tripod took 5 raw exposures resetting F-stop and exposure speed on each shot.

Lighting

Overcast with sun rays breaking through across field using Tiffen 77mm Circular Polarizer on two raw exposure.

Equipment

Camera - Canon EOS 50D Lens - Sigma 24-70mm 1:2.8 EXDG Tiffen 77mm Circular Polarizer Manfrotto Tripod

Inspiration

I enjoy traveling country roads and spotting interesting subjects to photograph. Spring season in Texas is one of the most beautiful time of the year and the colorful wildflowers inspires me to use the camera and my skills capturing this event. Most inspiration comes from the rewards and good compliments that I received on my photographs.

Editing

Post processing was done using Corel PaintShop Pro X7 (64-bit), stacked 3 raw exposures, converted to jpeg removed foreground power transmission lines and towers, using eraser and clone brush. Wanted the photo to have no human element, added more shadows and lights using illumination spot light filters.

Feedback

Texas is called the "land of contrast" make sure to visit this state during the months of March, April, and May to catch the beautiful wildflowers growing alone our roadsides. Do a little research if you haven't experience this. We have so many photo opportunities and sights in all corners of our state. There's a lot of organizations, clubs, forums and blogs that specializes in the Texas wildflower events. Texas even has community, towns and cities celebration/parties for the seasons of wildflowers. Its A Big Deal
