Behind The Lens

Location

Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, California.

Time

This photo was taken at night around 9:30pm.

Lighting

The spot lights were already on displaying the monument and I knew they were warm colors. I wanted as much of the blue sky to be in the photo to contrast the warm so I did a long exposure; roughly 30 seconds.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D200, 10-24mm wide angle lens, on a tripod for a long exposure.

Inspiration

One of the best pieces of advice I've received in regards to photography is to "look up." Too often as photographers, it is easy to look around ourselves at eye level, but to get really interesting and unique shots we may have to bend, twist, reach, flex, lay down, etc.

Editing

I edited this photo in Lightroom and I enhancement it by adjusting the contrast, clarity, and saturation to bring out the warm and cool tones in the photo.

In my camera bag

All sorts of gadgets and gizmos! I have two camera bodies, several lenses, macro lens filter, flash, batteries, chargers, memory cards, lens cloths, pocket knife, pens, protein bars, first aid stuff, water, and other misc things.

Feedback

It helps to have a tripod in order to capture a longer exposure like this. Also with a wider angle lens, you are able to capture more of the photo and it makes the columns look really tall and helps to frame the photo. Most importantly, look around, look up, look down, bend, twist, squat, lay on the ground. You'll be surprised at what you see and what you can capture by doing that.
