This is my favourite of all time. Two kangaroos were having breakfast in the fog. I didn't even notice right away.

Behind The Lens

Location

My husband and I were on our way to Victor Harbor, South Australia for sunrise photos but we stopped when I saw this scenery, at Mount Compass, South Australia

Time

It was on a very cold winter morning. We often (my husband and I) wake up super early, specially in winter, to go catch foggy sunrises in the Adelaide Hills.

Lighting

It was natural early morning lighting. I prefer natural lighting. I find a beauty in it that studio lighting doesn't give you. I go out early morning because to me it is the best possible lighting, or just before sunset.

Equipment

I used my old trusty Olympus E-PM2 and a Panasonic Lumix lens. No tripod, just hand held.

Inspiration

At first I didn't even see the kangaroos there. I was taking a photo of the tree because I thought it looked pretty with the fog, the orange tones and the hills at the back. I grabbed my camera after clicking a few shots just to make sure everything was in focus and while zooming in the image (not this one, another one) to see if everything was ok, if my settings were right, I noticed there was two kangaroos in the image. From that moment I tried to get the kangaroos attention by clicking my tongue clapping my hands (they were quite far away I was at 200mm zoom (my max zoom) until I got this perfect shot! This is to date my all time favourite photo.

Editing

Yes of course but very little processing. I use Lightroom and I am sure I tweaked the oranges a little, brought the blacks down, sharpened the image a little, and some cropping. But this photo was taken a few years ago. I have since changed computers and I don't have the original post processing details anymore.

In my camera bag

Usually I have my new camera, a Sony A7. My 3 lenses. My beautiful Carl Zeiss 16-35mm, my Sony 50mm lens and my little Sony zoom lens. I have a cleaning kit that is never too far away, 2 extra batteries (mirrorless cameras are very battery hungry :P) a few memory cards, and an adapter so I can view my photos on the iPad while we are driving back home.

Feedback

It really is a question of luck. I didn't even know my luck when I was there. It's a one in a lifetime opportunity. Just need to be there at the perfect time and have your camera ready. This one was in a field behind the main street. I was just lucky I was there at that time. But wake up early, seize the day, go out and explore!
