Gorgeous. The California drought created an interesting in our county. We had an invasion of brown and black bears. It was fun to shoot them with my camera.

Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured at Brooks Falls in Alaska. My husband and I travel as a hobby so I’m always on the lookout for great opportunities to capture photos.

Time

We got up early and caught a sea plane into the Brooks Falls area. The weather was poor and the flight was a bit scary and low. After emptying our pockets and packs of everything edible we hiked out to the falls. There were at least 10 grizzly bears fishing at the falls the entire hour that we were permitted to photograph.

Lighting

Though it was mid day the overcast skies made a lovely light box effect.

Equipment

Canon 5D Mark II was the camera I owned at the time. I used a 70-200 lens as we were able to get relatively close to the bears. The bears were far more interested in fishing than in us. No tripods were allowed and no flash was needed.

Inspiration

I had seen photographs of the Alaskan grizzlies and did some research before our epic trip to Alaska to determine where my best chances would be, Brooks Falls is managed by the forest service and I jumped at a chance to visit. It is an amazing experience if you get the opportunity.

Editing

Other than some sharpening, I did very little post processing.

In my camera bag

In my research, there was recommendations to use a 70-200. I normally would have included my 600 when shooting wildlife , but the recommendation was correct . In traveling to Alaska, I included my 600mm in my bag but didn’t need it for this shoot.

Feedback

Alaska is stunning and a wonderful place to shoot wildlife but come prepared for weather changes and with lots of patience. We were lucky to get the sea plane ride out to the Falls as the weather is often less than ideal. This trip is not for the faint of heart but well worth the effort.
