Location
The photo was taken on a friends farm, between Nannup & Bussleton southwest Western Australia.Time
The image was taken about 10pmLighting
I hung a torch inside the shed and originally was going to use this as the base exposure, before light painting the exterior of the shed, then a car lit the shed up and this was the result.Equipment
I used a Canon 70D and a Tokina 11 - 16 2.8 at f2.8 and a Glanz tripod with a Manfrotto Pano ball head.Inspiration
We visited friends at their farm & right outside her front door is this old shed & windmill there and then we organized an impromptu astro workshop/shoot, using these elements to create an interesting foreground.Editing
The processing was done in lightroom CC 6.1 Develope ModuleIn my camera bag
Canon 70D Tokina 11 - 16 2.8 ( lives on my camera) circular polarizing filter, 10 stop ND filter cleaning gear, Tripod with ball head. and assortment of torches.Feedback
For night shoots you need to really get to know your gear intimately, to be able to setup and operate in the dark. Have your Camera set in manual, settings can vary depending which camera you have, I generally use 20/25" iso 3200 f2.8, The most important thing to learn is to get pin point stars using manual focus which can be tricky at night. (try using live view & 10* digital zoom if your camera supports this, pick a bright star to focus on it) try not to use a bright torch, use a red light which will save your night vision, (usually takes between 10 - 20 min for your eyes to adjust). Happy star gazing.
