Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in our old historic home in Lynchburg, VA. This is the front entry of the house. We have since moved back to Church Hill, TN and I miss our old home.

Time

To get the effect I wanted with the intense light I had to shoot it when the light was beaming through the front door and that was around 6 in the evening after the sun mad its way around.

Lighting

Its all natural light, like everything else I shoot. My work is all about shooting naturally, it helps a great deal in making sure you get to be creative.

Equipment

I shot this using a Nikon D7000 on a tripod with a shutter release, no filter.

Inspiration

Well, this house was built around 1890. We have had many weird, unexplainable instances in the home. We have seen things thrown, figures moving up and down the halls. This photo is part of a small series I did when I got bored oddly enough. I wanted to create what I was seeing, an expression of my mood and my senses in the home. Every picture in the series is a representation of an event or a feeling.

Editing

Really I try to do everything right in the camera first, the only thing here was I made it a Black and white image and played with the contrast.

In my camera bag

My bag consists of a Nikon D7000, Tripod, ND Filters, CPL Filters, Nikkor 70-200mm F2.8 Lens, A fixed 35mm F1.8 Nikkor Lens, 18-55mm Lens, Shutter Release, Extra Batteries, (4) 32GB Memory Cards, Cleaning Cloths and a note book. I write my settings and lighting situations in my book for notes in case I get into a similar circumstance.

Feedback

Pay attention to how light enters a room. Notice all of the shadows and all of the bright spots and see how you can get them to work. Shooting natural light is hard and unpredictable. For instance I watched the lighting in the front entry of my home for a couple weeks during different parts of the day so that I knew when to get this shot. It also helps to have a daughter who doesn't mind being in the photos.
