Cool dip morning after camping at the highest campground on Mt Shasta. Cold snow runoff waters of the McCloud river are refreshing on a hot day. The upper falls are the hardest of the three to access, but well worth the climb.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken while perched on a rock facing the falls at the waters edge. I had to mind my balance to keep the image stable and clear. I enjoy challenging myself with awkward spots to stand as I do photography.

Time

This image was taken around 11 am while a group of friends and I were looking for a quiet place to cool off.

Lighting

The lighting was a little harsh as it was close to noon. You can tell by how bright the waterfall is! I don't like shooting between 11 am and 2pm because everything gets too bright. This location was too picturesque to pass up.

Equipment

The camera used in this shot was Canon T3i Rebel with just the base lens, no other equipment. I have yet to invest in anything better, but enjoy what I have to work with. The gear is only a small part of producing a quality image in my opinion.

Inspiration

A group of friends and I were on a 2 week road trip. This location was high on our "must see" destinations. The river has 3 falls, the upper falls in this image are the hardest to get to as you have to climb down a steep hill. We wanted to cool off in the pool on a hot August day. The water was refreshing for sure as it is runoff from the near by Mount Shasta Snow pack! I love to take photographs of moving water. I play with my shutter speed to get different effects.

Editing

I did some light adjustment due to the time of day and color adjustment. The pool at the base of the waterfall is truly an amazing dark aqua blue. This area is green and lush.

In my camera bag

My kit is basic. Better than my previous setup, but still super simple in comparison to most photographers. One lens, a few filters and the camera. Sometimes take a tri-pod with me.

Feedback

If you are shooting at the same time I was a UV filter will be your friend. It will make the post processing work a little easier. If you have to perch like I did, take your time, remember to breathe and don't drop your camera! Enjoy the scenery and capture what speaks to you.
