Behind The Lens

Location

We live on beautiful Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada and this photo was taken at Matheson Lake.

Time

This photo was taken in the late afternoon... about 3pm.

Lighting

The sun was to my right and a little behind me. There was some shade/trees behind my daughter, which really helps her 'pop'.

Equipment

I shot this image with my Nikon D610. I freelensed this image with my 50mm.

Inspiration

My husband & I were out with the kids & we sort of just stumbled across this lake. It was a hot day, so my daughter went straight into the water and started splashing away! I love shooting my daughter, I love shooting water -- pair that with freelensing --- LOVE!

Editing

I edited this image in ACR using one of my favourite VSCO presets and tweaked it a little!

In my camera bag

I always carry my Nikon D610, my 24 f/1.4 Sigma Art, 35 f/1.4, my 50 f1/8 which I usually use to freelense, a prism, a sandwich bag & my ExpoDisc. I also have a 28 f/1.8, 85 f/1.8, 70-200 f/2.8, and 105 f/2.8 Macro that I also occasionally add to my bag!

Feedback

Freelensing is such an amazing and fun way to get creative. I have only ever tried freelensing with my 50mm but I hear an 85mm works well too. Make sure your aperture is wide open and hold your unattached lens close to your camera body tilting it up, down or side to side. There are so many different possibilities with freelensing, it's incredible --- not to mention the incredible bokeh you can achieve!!
