Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a friends farm just outside Cooma in Australia

Time

This was a spur of the moment photo. we were just arriving at the farm after they picked me up at the airport. As we turned into the drive from the dusty farm road, I yelled "stop". Without thinking, I grabbed my camera, jumped out the vehicle and grabbed this shot. This was on March 12 at 4:09pm. It was hot, humid and sunny at the time.

Lighting

The lighting is all natural sunlight.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 500D, hand held with a Canon EFS 18-55 lens and F/10 f-stop and 1/4 sec exposure. ISO was 100, focal length 49mm and spot metering.

Inspiration

The whole countryside is dry and brown, but this area had a water collection point during rain periods. It had rained in the morning, so the plants had time to soak up some water and the lighting was just perfect. The leaves had been washed by the rain, everything was so green and contrasted well with the dirt road. It was like an oasis in the desert; an opportunity I could not pass over.

Editing

No post-processing. All my photography is as it is in the field. I believe in taking my time to get the right shot, no matter how long it takes and no matter how many photos I take. To me, the reward is getting the perfect shot in the field with no digital enhancement (personal choice).

In my camera bag

All my kit is permanently in my bag. It may be a slight overkill, but seen as I am always out in the bush or somewhere far away from the car or home, I would prefer to be well prepared, after all, you never know what you will come across out there in the wild. My bag consists of EOS 7D MARK II, Rebel EOS 500D, EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens, EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Digital Lens, EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM Lens, EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens, EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM, EF 75-300mm, f/4-5.6 III USM Lens, 58PLCII Polarising Filter, 16Gb Compact Flash card, 16Gb SD Card, 1Gb SD Card, spare batteries for both cameras, Takaro TM-2330 Tripod, RS-60E3 Remote Cable Switch, Canon 7D Shutter release cable, EW-60C Lens Hood, T-60 Lens Hood. The total weight of the kit is around 7kg, but I have got used to it and can walk for miles with it on my back.

Feedback

For photos of this nature, there is pretty much only two angles you can shoot this photo; this end or from the other end, so watch out for the best lighting and any objects that will either add interest or distract from the end result you are trying to capture. Also, make sure that you get the near edges of the road either directly in the bottom corners of the photo or evenly spaced from the corner along the bottom or up the sides (rule of thirds scenario). Fill the photo with your image and make sure that the most important part of the photo is in the middle. For this photo, the attraction point was the greenery at the en of the "tunnel" where the road disappeared to the left and the shadow in the middle of the road indicating thicker foliage.
