Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Hanalei Bay in Kauai.

Time

It was around on and about twenty minutes or so after checking into our hotel. In the course of those twenty minutes we experienced sunshine, then a thundering rain storm, and finally this magnificent rainbow once the clouds cleared.

Lighting

The clouds made it difficult to expose this image properly as the majority of the photo is covered in shadows with the sky showing around the edges. I had to be careful not to blow out the rainbow and the sky since they provide an interesting contrast from the otherwise gloomy landscape.

Equipment

I used a Canon Rebel t5i with a Tamaron 18-55mm f2.8 to capture this image.

Inspiration

The vibrance of the rainbow was unlike anything I had ever seen before and marked the start to an amazing trip.

Editing

I adjusted the highlights and shadows a bit, and increased the vibrance a bit, but the colors were already so prominent that they needed little saturation to have them pop.

In my camera bag

I normally carry a Panasonic GH4 with a 12-35mm f2.8 as my go to lens. In addition I'll carry a couple of primes, a 12mm f2 and a 50mm f1.8. Sometimes I'll carry another body and lens, but my GH4 is my primary camera right now. I always have a rig of some sort on me for video, my go to rig being a tripod, gimbal, or slider. A few other things I keep are some ND filters, a polarizer, and an intervalometer.

Feedback

I've learned that it is a good idea to make your aperture be around an 8 or bigger as till keep more things in focus, and also use a polarizer for situations like this, (unfortunately I didn't have one on me). Also try to work with foreground as it'll add more depth to your photo. I would also experiment with you shutter speed so that you can better capture the moment and communicate a similar experience to the one that you had while taking the photo.
