Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was made from atop a dune at Vilano Beach, across the Matanzas inlet from St. Augustine, Fla. The light is across an island and another inlet and somewhat remove form the city of St. Augustine.

Time

Early morning, but after the sun was full up.

Lighting

Even in the daylight the lighthouse is a local beacon. If one becomes disoriented, one looks for the lighthouse.

Equipment

My camera was set on a well beaten-up Manfrotto trip with a Manfrotto ball head. The camera was a Nikon D7100. The lens was an AF Nikkor 70-210mm f/4-5.6. The settings were ƒ/11.0, 125.0 mm, 1/500 sec., ISO 400. RAW.

Inspiration

The geometry of the photo, the verticals and horizontals, first drew me. Also the prominence of the light, even as small as it is in relation to the whole image.

Editing

Some cropping and brightening are all I did. I use Photoshop Elements and Nik filters ... sparingly.

In my camera bag

Nikon D500, Nikon D7100, Rokinon 8mm f3.5, Tamron 150-600mm G1, Nikkor DX 18-200mm f5-6.3, Sigma DX 18-35mm f1.8 ART, AF Nikkor 70-210, Hoodman hooded loupe for fine focusing from the live view screen, dusting kit, Benro heavy duty tripod, Movo gimbal head.

Feedback

I am meticulous in my setup and use a tripod as much as possible. All the while that I'm setting up, I'm pondering the kind of picture I'm going to make. I take my time. Since lighting is so crucial, taking my time means beginning my setup long before the expected light appears. Before I set up I scan my potential scene. Scanning is a continuous process right up until releasing the shutter.
