I'm humbled and honored. I have to admit, this is one of favorite works. I'm especially proud that it was captured with a single shot; not a burst. :)

Location
My favorite pastime is event photography. I love it because it typically high energy, exciting and happy people involved. Another reason I love being an event photographer is that I get invited to events about which I might not otherwise be aware. I used to hate reading about an event in the newspaper, only to learn that it had already taken place! This shot was taken at an outdoor rodeo at Driskoll Ranch in La Honda, CA. I'm especially proud that I got the image with a single shutter click! (No burst shooting) I was fortunate to be allowed next to the fence for a good vantage point.Time
I spent most of the day at the rodeo and got this shot in the early afternoon. Thankfully, the sky was a bit overcast, minimizing the usual struggle with sharp shadows.Lighting
When shooting outside, especially mid-day, harsh shadows are typically a challenge. When possible, I get close enough to the subject to use my Speedlite 580exII to fill in the shadows.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Canon Rebel T1i with the kit 18-55mm lens, which shows you don't have to use the most high-end camera to get decent images.Inspiration
I've always enjoyed rodeos and this one took place very near where I live.Editing
Although I am now proficient in the use of Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, this image is straight out of camera. In my camera bag
I now have a Canon 60D, two Speedlites, a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses. I also frequently use a circular polarizing filter for outdoor shooting.Feedback
I think the most important things about shooting events like this are to learn your cameras controls so you can quickly change settings as conditions change and get your basic settings before starting. Also, don't look away and don't put your camera away until you've left the area. I've learned by experience that you never know when the next great shot is going to present itself to you.
