Location
This image was photographed in Paris, France. I booked this room on Airbnb particularly because of the unusual decor. It was a small flat complete with half a dozen stuffed birds and a display of baroque antiques...candy for the eyes, indeed.Time
It was mid day. Certainly not the ideal time to photograph but the city landscape glowed in the distance and our time was limited. We had to make the best of the time of day.Lighting
Since the sun shown like a spotlight in the landscape, I used a small off-camera flash to light my two subjects from the inside, ever so softly to help them pop out of the shadows.Equipment
This was shot on a manfrotto tripod with a Nikon D600 using my 50mm lens.Inspiration
Most of my images are inspired by ideas, happenings in my life or that of someone close to me. As I mentioned before, this flat was full of surprises with strange "props" in every corner. After my friend and I spent the day talking about life, love and family, it only seemed natural that I try to re-create that situation using a stuffed heron as a companion to the conversation.Editing
Yes, most of my pieces have a healthy dose of post-processing, however, this image contained less than usual. I always tweak the basics in Lightroom and then retreat to Photoshop for any major compositing. Since the Heron was actually in the room, most of the post work focused on smoothing details and removing distractions as well as tweaking the colors. In my camera bag
Since I usually walk out the door with props a plenty, I try to make sure that my camera bag doesn't add to the already extensive weight. So aside from the camera and tripod, I take my 50mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.4 along for the ride. I have been told at times, that my tripod is sometimes viewed as another companion on my trips.Feedback
I often look for inspiring locations whether indoors or out. The ideas flow so easily when immersed in something quirky, unusual or whimsical. And as much as I enjoy compositing, it is rather refreshing to be able to work with such a life size prop and create exactly my intended vision in camera. Plus, it always helps to have a willing friend who is happy to engage in my strange requests for modeling on a whim in a foreign city.
