Behind The Lens

Location

Arizona State Fair 2013

Time

This was shot at 10:54pm

Lighting

With lights all around me, I did not use any lighting from camera.

Equipment

Canon 1DX with a Sigma 12-24 4.5 lens on a tripod at focal length of 12 and F stop of 22 exposure 1 sec

Inspiration

I love using lights that are available to me, and what better way then at a state fair. There are colored lights, bright lights and moving lights all around to get anyone's creative mind spinning.

Editing

I did bump the contrast and reduced some minor noise in this image

In my camera bag

My bag holds my Canon 1DX, Canon EF 70-200 2.8, Canon EF 85 1.8, Sigma 27-70 2.8, Sigma 12-24 4.5, Canon Speedlight 580EX, CamRanger remote hookup, several filters and extra batteries

Feedback

This is a relatively easy shot to get, but must be done on a tripod and use the camera timer to eliminate any camera shake. Make sure you're on stable ground, not on top on anything that may be vibrating or shaking. Max out your F stop to let in as little light as possible. I had my ISO at 100 as well, to get the length of shutter speed to a slower setting, to allow for the motion of the lights and slight blur of the people. Any longer shutter speed, will give you more ghosting effect on the people and even wipe them out completely, depending upon how fast there are moving during the shot. I took 5 attempts at the image, as the lights on the ferris wheel would change and would get different looks, until I achieved the look that I liked. You must be patient, as in this environment you will have lots of people moving, that you can not control. So be ready to spend up to 30 min to get your shot the way you like it.
