Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the Horseshoe Bay north of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Time

I got up early in the morning to get good shots of the bridge. The weather in the bay is quite unpredictable, and I was lucky in getting a pretty sunrise with just enough haze to make for a mystical shot.

Lighting

I'm all about natural lighting and love morning light.

Equipment

I used an old Nikon D80 with a Nikon 12-24mm lens, an ND filter and a small tripod.

Inspiration

It was my first visit to San Francisco, and the Golden Gate Bridge has always been a dream shot. It was worth getting up early, finding a nice spot and waiting for the right light.

Editing

Yes, the processing includes perspective correction, exposure and shadow adjustment, and some color tweaks.

In my camera bag

Currently, I'm using an Olympus OM-D E-M1 with an array of lenses, e.g. the 12-40mm f2.8 and the 25mm f1.8. For serious photography trips I typically add a tripod and an ND filter.

Feedback

Personally, I like to first explore a location without taking photos, to then come back later and take pictures. That's not always possible, of course. For shots like this one, I like to do a little research before - check locations and angles on a map, think about the best time of the day to get good light from the right direction. At the location, I try to be patient and experiment with taking the same subject from different angles, heights and distances.
